Background

The Greig Hall was built in 1958. It was financed by David Greig, a successful businessman, in memory of his wife Hannah Susan, who worked with Alcester's young people. Ever since, the site has blossomed into an important, well loved and valued community asset and it is used regularly by over 50 groups as a venue for hire for various functions such as weddings, concerts and parties and has recently seen a major £1.2m investment in a new fitness suite, dance studio and multi-purpose hall and changing rooms.

The site and its operations are financed by The Hannah Susan Greig Memorial Trust - a registered charity and collaboration of committed members of the local community as well as the Greig family. Stratford District and Alcester Town Councils have also provided financial support.

For a number of years now, the Trust has been operating at a financial loss and as a result, its current trading is unsustainable. Without positive action, the closure of the Greig facilities in the near future will be inevitable.

The Greig Hall itself is in a state of disrepair with a need for significant investment to upgrade it, and the works that are becoming necessary on a yearly basis are draining resources that could better be spent elsewhere. In its current state, it is no longer meeting the requirements for which it was first intended, so action has become necessary.

Consequently, over the past few years, the Trust has been examining in detail a number of options in an effort to secure the future of the Greig, culminating in this application. You can find full details on the proposals here.
